Yesterday was el dia de los Reyes – Three Kings Day. Thanks to your generosity, I was able to work with my niece, Nicole Ortiz, who lives in Puerto Rico, to realize this vision. Over the last couple of weeks, Nicole used your contributions to buy over 100 gifts at stores in San Juan: sports equipment, board games, dolls, action figures, stuffed animals, and others. She recruited a friend, Yasmiri Rodriguez, to help her with the shopping. Yesterday, Nicole and Yasmiri set up a couple of tables in front of a colmado (small convenience store) in Luis Llorens Torres, San Juan’s largest housing project. I spent several years living in Llorens as a child, and then moved just outside its boundaries to the Santurce neighborhood. Yasmiri’s father set up some speakers to play music for the event, and they hired a snack vendor to serve popcorn and nachos to the kids. Nicole and Yasmiri started out the day by inviting a few of the kids they know from Llorens to come and choose their gifts; then those kids went and told some friends, and the word spread gradually. Over the course of two hours, about 100 kids came by the tables, all the gifts were given away, and all the snacks were eaten. It was a great day, with smiles and joy all around. Thank you so much for making it possible!
